Bust: A blackjack word for having a hand with a value exceeding 21.

Double Down: When the player chooses the option of doubling the bet on their hand and only requesting one card from the dealer

Hit: The blackjack word for requesting another card from the dealer.

Push: A tie where the total of the player's hand and the dealer's hand are even. Usually the player keeps his/her money except in the case of blackjacks.

Splitting Pairs: The word used in blackjack when the player's original hand has two cards of the same value. The player is given the option to split their hand into two separate hands and make another bet of equal value.

Stand: To decline another card.

Surrender: A blackjack word that is used when a player discontinues playing after receiving the 1st two cards, and chooses only to loose half of the amount wagered.

Burn Card: A single card taken from the top of the deck or the first card in a shoe which the dealer slides across the table from his/her left to the right, and is placed into the discard tray.

Card Counting: To count cards. Using the face value of the cards (i.e. face cards or number cards), the card counter determines when the deck is weighted in his/her favour.

Hole Card: Any face down card. The definition most often refers to the dealer's single face down card.

Shoe: A blackjack word for the device that is used to hold up to eight decks of cards which allows the dealer to slide out the cards one at a time.

Hard Hand: A hand in which any Ace is counted as a 1 and not as an 11, or a hand without an ace.

Soft Hand: A hand in which the Ace is counted as an 11 and not as a 1.

Pair: When a player's first two cards are numerically identical.

Up Card: This word refers to the dealer's hand that is made visible to the player.
